Health Benefits of Green Coffee Extract

While most of the buzz around green coffee bean extract (GCBE) has revolved around its use as a slimming pill, there is promising evidence that it may aid in the control and treatment of a number of other medical conditions, most notably, hypertension.

Green Coffee Bean Extract and Hypertension

Could GCBE be the next great thing in the battle against high blood pressure? Study results are very promising.

In 2002, one study noted that chlorogenic acid, a key component of green coffee bean extract, reduced spontaneous high blood pressure in lab rats,

A subsequent study was conducted on human subjects. In 2004, 117 mildly-hypertensive men took part in a controlled, double-blind study to test the effectiveness of 3 different doses of green coffee bean extract on their blood pressure. After 28 days, the men taking 93mg or 185 mg of GCBE had significant reductions in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure when compared to the men given a placebo.

Antioxidant Properties

Green cofee beans offer the same powerful polyphenol antioxidants as are present in green tea, particularly, a group called chlorogenic acid (CGA) – which is regarded as being the key component of GCBE. Generally, antioxidants fight the negative effects of free radicals which damage cells and bring about aging and disease.

Chemoprotective and Anti-Genotoxic

A 2006 German lab study examined the effects of bread enriched with green coffee extract and evaluated it’s impact on human cells in culture. The analysis attempted to demonstrate GCBE’s ability to protect healthy tissue from toxins and to guard against the kind of chemicals which damage a cell’s DNA, causing mutations or even cancer. Effects were evaluated against a standardized scale antioxidant capacity. The conclusion: cells treated with the supplemented bread showed increased resistance of colon and liver cells to oxidative stress.

It is critical to recognize that findings from “in vitro” studies like this often don’t hold up in clinical tests on humans. Further study is needed to assess if green coffee bean extract is effective in real-life situations and to establish dosing and safety guidelines, but it certainly is fascinating research which could someday develop into a tool in preventing and treating cancer.

Does Arabica or Robusta have more Chlorogenic Acid? Should it Matter?

The amount of chlorogenic acid matters but the type of coffee bean from which it comes, does not. Please continue reading. Here is some background and detail…

Chlorogenic acid was discovered in 1932.

Raw coffee beans have a higher level of chlorogenic acid than any other species of plant.

Chlorogenic acid is present in raw green coffee beans but is mostly destroyed in the coffee roasting process.

Both Robusta coffee beans and Arabica coffee beans have high levels of chlorogenic acid.

Many health supplement companies claim that Arabica coffee beans are best for chlorogenic acid, but studies have shown the contrary is true.

Climate and other environmental factors influence the amount of chlorogenic acid in coffee beans, so Robusta coffee beans, which are grown in harsher climates than Arabica, have as much as twice the concentrations of chlorogenic acid as Arabica coffee beans.

The higher concentrations of chlorogenic acid in Robusta coffee beans may also explain the bitter, harsher of coffee from roasted Robusta beans.

Because Arabica coffee tastes better, the demand is higher and so the price is higher.

Robusta coffee originated in Ethiopia and grows indigenously in Western and Central Africa. Arabica coffee also originated in Ethiopia but did so about a century earlier than Robusta. Arabica makes up the greatest percentage of the worlds coffee production.

So, as far as green coffee extract supplements are involved, it simply does not matter whether the chlorogenic acid is from Robusta coffee beans or Arabica coffee beans. Be sure you always read ingredients labels to see what the amount of chlorogenic acid is, and if possible make sure the ingredients are lab-verified for purity and chlorogenic acid level. But don’t worry about which species of coffee bean the chlorogenic acid originates from. It matters not. Claims to the contrary are nothing more than marketing hype.

Green Coffee Beans

Green coffee beans are beans that have not been roasted. Green coffee beans contain chlorogenic acid which has been proven to slow the discharge of glucose into the body after a meal, thereby promoting weight reduction. When coffee beans are roasted, the chlorogenic acid is lost. Hence the reason why coffee consumption has not shown the same weight reduction benefits as green coffee bean extract.

Nine scientific studies evaluated green coffee bean’s health advantages. A minimum 45 percent chlorogenic acid content was contained in the green coffee bean extract used in the clinical research studies.

Weight Reduction Achieved with no Diet Changes

Research published in Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome and Obesity examined the impact of green coffee bean extract on weight loss. The study’s participants were randomized to receive either 1050 mg of green coffee bean extract, 700 mg of green coffee bean extract or a placebo each and every day. The analysis lasted 22 weeks or just over five months. The participants were asked not to change their diets and on average people ate 2400 calories per day which does not represent a calorie-reduced diet. The average fat loss in the study was 17 pounds with the lowest fat loss being seven pounds and the highest 26 pounds. Body fat also declined by 16 percent.

Chlorogenic Acid: Powerful Active Ingredient

Researchers believe it is the chlorogenic acid that assists with weight reduction as chlorogenic acid has been proven to inhibit sugar absorption from starch consumption. Chlorogenic acid has a significant influence on glucose metabolism where it was found to reduce post-meal glucose levels. Other studies have shown that chlorogenic acid retards the absorption of fats from the intestines and also activates fat metabolism in the liver and lowers triglycerides.

A randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind study published in the Journal of International Medical Research investigated the efficacy and tolerability of green coffee bean extract. Green coffee bean extract containing a minimum of 45% chlorogenic acid was found to lessen the absorption of sugar in the gastrointestinal tract. Forty obese volunteers were part of the 12-week study. Body weight, body composition, and blood pressure were recorded at baseline and every month during the study. The results showed a significant difference in weight reduction of over 10 pounds in the treatment group versus 2.4 pounds in the placebo group. BMI decreased by up to 10%.

Cardiovascular Disease: How Chlorogenic Acid In Coffee May Prevent It

Coffee and Chlorogenic Acid

Chlorogenic acid is amongst the naturally occurring chemicals in coffee. It is an antioxidant. It can help to improve the endothelial function in our bodies and increases metric oxide, which lowers blood pressure level by relieving the arteries. Quite simply the research today is telling us that consuming coffee long term does not put us at risk for hypertension or heart disease. The researchers are in agreement. The advantages from chlorogenic acid help in lowering the occurrence of strokes, heart disease and cardiovascular disease.

Chlorogenic acid is one of the more abundant polyphenol antioxidants within coffee. The polyphenols boost cholesterol flow from the walls of our arteries which reduce the damaging risk of plague accumulation.

The American Heart Association Statistics on CHD

Year after year the American Heart Association compiles data to give us the latest statistics about heart disease. Based on their data:

· The death rate from heart disease has actually decreased by 30%

· Having said that, cardiovascular disease continues to be a major issue in the United States. Cardiac arrest and strokes affect 1.5 million Americans each year.

· The number of Americans that are obese or overweight is two thirds, being overweight plays a part in heart problems.

· One third suffer from hypertension

· 17-21% smoke tobacco

· 15% have high cholesterol

· 8% have diabetes

· One third of American kids are over weight or obese.

The studies are showing that consuming coffee could very well help decrease your risks of developing coronary heart disease. I’m no medical doctor, so please check with yours regularly. I know I do. Intake of anything ought to be done in moderation…enjoy your coffee.
