Green Coffee Bean Extract

Standard

Green coffee bean extract is a supplement that has been touted for its miraculous power to contribute to weight loss. Made from unroasted coffee beans, green coffee extract contains higher amounts of chlorogenic acid than traditional coffee made from roasted beans. The extract increased in popularity when TV doctor, Dr Mehmet Oz, revealed the outcomes of an experiment in which persons given the green coffee bean extract lost more weight than a control group. The extract has other benefits including reducing blood pressure levels. However, there are potential side effects for example negative interactions with other medications.

What is Green Coffee Bean Extract?

Green coffee bean extract, abbreviated GCBE, is an extract extracted from unroasted green coffee beans. Green coffee typically refers to coffee produced from ripe coffee beans that have not been roasted, and not from beans that are green in color or unripe. The most common coffee plants are the Arabica and Robusta. The beans used for the extract may be known as green, natural, raw or unroasted beans. Regular coffee is made by first roasting the ripe beans before they are ground and brewed for drinking. The roasting of the beans makes the coffee more palatable, with a smoky taste achieved. The taste is normally the primary attraction for coffee produced from roasted beans.

Coffee beans contain chlorogenic acid. Chlorogenic acid is an antioxidant which helps to speed up fat loss by impacting the way the body metabolizes fat. This acid also decreases the rate at which glucose is released into the blood vessels. It is these qualities of coffee beans that make them beneficial to a fat loss regimen. Chlorogenic acid is found in its highest concentration in the unroasted coffee beans. The heat used in the roasting process has a negative effect on the chlorogenic acid content as much of it is destroyed by the heat. Along with its higher chlorogenic acid content, green coffee bean extract also has less caffeine than regular coffee and therefore has a lower stimulating effect. The extract made from the beans is packaged into capsules and have a chlorogenic acid content ranging, ideally, from 40 % or more.
